Abstract

Chromogenic assays (color detection) result in colored reaction products. By detecting the color change before and after the reaction, substance concentration can be determined by the naked eye, light microscopes, or spectrophotometers. Color detection exhibits great potential in the field of quality monitoring, chemical technology, nanophysics, and clinical medicine, because of its rapid, direct, specific, convenient, and sensitive features. The intention of this book is to provide readers with a comprehensive overview of the principles, features, and applications of color detection.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Flavonoids with over 6000 natural colorful compounds are a unique class of phytonutrients found in almost all vegetables, fruits, and herbs. This book discusses the nature and role of these compounds by studying the molecular mechanism of flavonoids using spectroscopy and computational tools. The book also addresses the characteristics of natural vs. synthetic colors from both chemical and biological points of view. More importantly, a lengthy chapter explains in full detail the usefulness of these natural coloring properties to provide a safe, efficient, and economic therapy and/or prophylaxis of many health problems, e.g. obesity and cardiovascular disorders. This book poses a balance between developments in scientific research and the idea that researchers must be able to absorb and link scientific advances with clinical practice so that the management of diseases can be based on sound physiological concepts.

Abstract

Color vision is considered a microcosm of the visual science. Special physiological and psychological processes make this scientific topic an intriguing and complex research field that can aggregates around molecular biologists, neurophysiologists, physicists, psychophysicists and cognitive neuroscientists. Our purpose is to present the frontier knowledge of this area of visual science, showing, in the end, the future prospects of application and basic studies of color perception.

Abstract

This book presents a major leap forward in the understanding of colour by showing how richer descriptions of colour samples can be operationalized in agent-based models. Four different language strategies are explored: the basic colour strategy, the graded membership strategy, the category combination strategy and the basic modification strategy. These strategies are firmly rooted in empirical observations in natural languages, with a focus on compositionality at both the syntactic and semantic level. Through a series of in-depth experiments, this book discerns the impact of the environment, language and embodiment on the formation of basic colour systems. Finally, the experiments demonstrate how language users can invent their own language strategies of increasing complexity by combining primitive cognitive operators, and how these strategies can be aligned between language users through linguistic interactions.

Abstract

The light distribution of LED-systems, especially the colour distribution gets more and more important. As white light of LED-systems is received in a different way than with incandescent or fluorescent lamps different the radiation can contain different colours. Part of this work was to develop a method to present and describe these color shadows based on the results of existing color measurement methods.

Abstract

Starting from psychophysics, over the last 50 years, most progress in unravelling the mechanisms of color vision has been made through the study of single cell responses, mainly in LGN and striate cortex. A similar development in the study of form perception may seem to be underway, centred on the study of temporal cortex. However, because of the combinatorial characteristics of form perception, we are also observing the opposite tendency: from single-cell activity to population coding, and from static receptive field structures to system dynamics and integration and, ultimately, a synthetic form of psychophysics of color and form perception. From single cells to system integration: it is this development the present Research Topic wishes to highlight and promote. How does this development affect our views on the various attributes of perception? In particular, we are interested in to what extent evolving knowledge in the field of color perception is relevant within a developing integrative framework of form perception. The goal of this Research Topic is to bring together experimental research encompassing both color and form perception. For this volume, we planned a broad scope of topics – on color in complex scenes, color and form, as well as dynamic aspects of form perception. We expect that the Research Topic will be attractive to the community of researchers whose work straddles the boundary between the two visual perception fields, as well as to the wider community interested in integrative/systems neuroscience.

Abstract

Beiträge von: Ulrike Boskamp, Werner Busch, Erna Fiorentini, John Gage, Bettina Gockel, Ursula Klein, Carolin Meister, Jutta Müller-Tamm, Annik Pietsch, H. Otto Sibum, Monika Wagner, Marc Wellmann.
